What to Know About Water Baptisms

What is baptism, and why is it important?

Baptism is a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ and symbolizes being cleansed from sin and beginning a new life in relationship with Him. It’s a step of obedience and a visible expression of an inward transformation.

Who can be baptized?

Anyone of any age who understands the meaning of baptism and has personally decided to follow Jesus can be baptized.

Is baptism necessary for salvation?

No. Salvation comes by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is an important act of public declaring your faith and trust in Him.

What should I wear?

Typically, participants wear dark-colored clothing that can get wet, like a t-shirt and shorts. E58 provides shirts you can wear when you sign up for baptism. A towel and a change of clothes are also recommended.

What if I’ve already been baptized—should I do it again?

If you were baptized after placing your faith in Jesus, there’s no need to be baptized again. However, if your baptism happened before you personally chose to follow Christ, you may choose to be baptized as a reflection of your own decision.

Do I need to be a member of the church to be baptized?

Church membership is not required for baptism. What matters most is your personal decision to follow Jesus.

Can my friends and family come?

Yes! Baptism is a celebration, and loved ones are usually encouraged to attend and support.

What if I’m not perfect or still struggling?

Baptism isn’t about having everything together. It’s about saying “yes” to Jesus and inviting Him to transform your life. Struggles don’t disqualify you—they’re why grace exists. Baptism is about trusting Jesus and publicly declaring that you are letting Him walk with you through the journey.

What does baptism symbolize?

Baptism symbolizes being washed clean from sin, dying to your old life, and rising into a new life with Jesus. (Romans 6:4). Going under the water represents dying to sin, and rising up represents being raised with Christ. It’s a powerful picture of the transformation that happens when you follow Him.

Will I feel different after being baptized?

Some do experience a strong emotional or spiritual shift; others may not feel much. The importance lies in the act of obedience and the spiritual truth it represents.  While the water itself doesn’t change you, many people feel a deep sense of joy, peace, and closeness to God as they take this step of faith and obedience.
