Good Friday

Learn more about Good Friday, recognize its significance, and enter into an experience of the crucifixion of Jesus.

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and how He suffered and died on the cross. He willingly endured this, knowing it led to His resurrection, our salvation, and the beginning of God’s reign of righteousness and peace. On the cross, we see the convergence of great suffering and God’s forgiveness. So remember that no matter what you have done or how far you feel we have strayed – Jesus already paid the price for your sins and suffering because He loves you. You are set free and made righteous through Him.

What is communion?

It is a common Christian practice to take communion on Good Friday. Communion is a unique time of worship to memorialize the Lord’s death through prayer, meditation, and the symbolic consumption of Christ's body and blood. Consuming a small piece of bread and a sip of wine (or grape juice) symbolizes receiving the body and blood of Jesus and the sacrifice He made on the cross for us.

Jesus first takes communion with His disciples at the meal known as the Last Supper. Matthew 26:26-29 (NIV) recalls this moment:

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
